Deep Links Are Acquisition Infrastructure for AI Discovery

Learn how Universal Links, Android App Links, fallbacks, and destination monitoring turn an AI recommendation into a useful in-app handoff.

A useful AI recommendation explains why an app fits and offers an appropriate next step. A store listing can be right for a new user; a person choosing a specific class, listing, route or experience benefits from a destination that preserves that intent. Open the selected experience directly when possible and fall back gracefully when necessary.

Deep linking is therefore not a final implementation detail. It is part of the information product that a search or AI system evaluates.

Separate selection from routing

A retrieval system first chooses an entity: perhaps a 20-minute beginner rowing class. Routing then chooses the best destination for this user’s platform, region, authentication state, and installation state.

Those decisions require different data. Selection uses the entity’s name, type, summary, attributes, availability, source, and freshness. Routing uses destination kind, platform, priority, conditions, fallback, and observed health.

Flattening everything into one URL removes the ability to make a safe choice. A custom scheme may work only when the app is installed. A store URL may install the app but lose the selected entity. A web URL may be universal across platforms but redirect away from the original content.

Apple’s Universal Links use an association between the app and website. If the application is installed, the operating system can open the relevant app content; otherwise the same HTTPS link can provide a browser experience.

Android App Links similarly rely on verified domain ownership through Digital Asset Links. Android’s documentation emphasizes that a single verified HTTPS URL can route into the app while retaining a web fallback for people without it.

These mechanisms are stronger than unverified custom schemes because they connect an owned domain to a specific application. They still need careful path design. A domain association can be valid while an individual entity URL returns a 404 or resolves to the wrong screen.

Publish destination candidates explicitly

For every discoverable item, describe destinations as structured candidates rather than anonymous links:

  • URL;
  • kind, such as universal link, Android App Link, web, store, or custom URI;
  • applicable platform;
  • priority;
  • region or authentication conditions;
  • fallback relationship.

The publisher should provide the intended destinations. An index or routing service can add separate observations: HTTP status, redirect target, check time, latency, and whether verification files are present. Do not let a transient check overwrite the publisher’s source record.

Design fallbacks around intent preservation

A useful fallback ladder might be:

  1. verified entity-level HTTPS link that opens the installed app;
  2. entity-level mobile web page;
  3. app-store listing with a deferred-link mechanism;
  4. application homepage only when no entity destination exists.

Test the ladder on real devices and under logged-out conditions. Record when a destination requires authentication or is unavailable in a region. “It opened during an engineer’s test” is not sufficient coverage.

Measure destination success

Instrument destination selection separately from click and completion. Useful measures include destination availability, percentage of entity-level routes, fallback rate, redirect drift, app-open success, and the downstream action the user intended.

Blue Jetty treats routing as a first-class part of app indexing. Publish the native, universal, store, and web destinations attached to each entity so an AI answer can preserve the user’s intent and hand them to the exact experience that justified the result.

The next wave of app acquisition will reward catalogs that are both understandable and routable. Rich metadata without a working handoff is an attractive dead end.
