Structured Data for Mobile Apps: What JSON-LD Can Do

Use SoftwareApplication JSON-LD accurately, connect it to visible app content, and understand where feeds, pages, and verified destinations still matter.

JSON-LD can help search and retrieval systems identify a mobile application, but it cannot make an invisible in-app catalog discoverable by itself. Use SoftwareApplication markup for the app facts visible on a page. Start with capabilities, relevant experiences and destinations; publish individual item records where their detail materially helps selection rather than mirroring the entire catalog.

That distinction is easy to miss. Teams often add one JSON-LD block to a landing page and expect systems to understand thousands of classes, products, routes, or listings. The markup describes the landing page’s subject. It does not grant a crawler access to content that never appears on the web.

Build a truthful application entity

Schema.org defines `SoftwareApplication` as a software application and provides properties such as name, applicationCategory, operatingSystem, installUrl, and identifiers. A useful application block can also connect the app to its publisher and canonical page.

The structured representation must match visible content. Google’s structured data guidelines warn against marking up hidden, irrelevant, or misleading information. If the page says the app supports iOS, names the developer, and links to the App Store, the JSON-LD can express those facts. It should not invent ratings, reviews, features, or availability that a reader cannot verify on the page.

A simplified shape looks like this:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "SoftwareApplication",
  "@id": "https://example.com/apps/example-app",
  "name": "Example App",
  "operatingSystem": ["iOS", "Android"],
  "applicationCategory": "HealthApplication",
  "installUrl": "https://apps.apple.com/app/id123456789"
}

Use stable identifiers and absolute URLs. If iOS and Android listings represent the same product, retain both platform identities rather than flattening them into an ambiguous name match.

Model in-app entities at their own URLs

Suppose a trail app has a page for “Coastal Loop.” That page can describe the trail as the main entity and separately identify the software application that handles its verified destination. The visible page might show distance, difficulty, region, last update, and a link that opens the trail.

Do not force every vertical into SoftwareApplication. A restaurant, event, product, course, trail, or workout may map to another Schema.org type—or may need a small domain-specific JSON record when the public vocabulary is lossy. Honest partial mapping is better than technically valid but semantically false markup.

Pair JSON-LD with discovery infrastructure

JSON-LD works inside a larger chain:

  1. Crawlable server-rendered HTML exposes the same core facts to readers.
  2. Canonical links consolidate duplicate URLs.
  3. Internal navigation and XML sitemaps reveal the pages.
  4. JSON or JSON Lines feeds support efficient machine consumption.
  5. Verified Universal Links or Android App Links route the user.
  6. Timestamps and evidence distinguish current publisher claims from index observations.

Google states that structured data is not required for its AI features and that there is no special AI-search schema. Its ordinary indexing and people-first content guidance still applies. Markup can improve clarity and eligibility for supported search appearances, but it cannot guarantee crawling, ranking, or citation.

Validate the rendered result

Test the deployed page, not just a local template. Confirm that JSON-LD parses, its canonical URLs use the production host, every described field is visible, and the destination is reachable. Check pages after data refreshes so stale markup does not diverge from the screen.

Blue Jetty connects publisher-approved app context to the experience and link an assistant can recommend. Its search, feeds, JSONL, schemas and OpenAPI make that app map and any selected structured data accessible through consistent interfaces, with explicit identity and authority boundaries.

Structured data is an explanation layer. Discovery still depends on accessible content, coherent identity, and reliable routing.
